Do you know how to brush your teeth?
Of course you do?
But, could you explain to someone else how to do it?
Easy you say?
The students of 5/6 TV thought they had been given an easy task when they were asked to write a procedural text listing the steps explaining to someone how to clean their teeth. But what if that person was an ‘alien’ who had never cleaned their teeth before?
Everyone had a lot of fun following the directions of their peers and soon realised the need to give clear and specific directions.
This exercise helped them when they began to write their own Procedural texts.
The video below shows how Jack tried to give his teacher, Tim, directions for cleaning his teeth. It didn’t turn out exactly as Jack had planned, but they got there in the end.
I loved watching the video Year 5/6 TV.
It gave me quite a laugh.
We all make so many assumptions when we give instructions to others. Sounds like the lesson learnt here is to try them out first on a willing participant to check out the sequence of your instructions and how clear they are.

It was funny seeing Tim try to brush his teeth with Jack’s instructions! It makes you realise that you have to be careful what you write. Proves everything isn’t as simple as it seems.

LOL! Tough break Jack, that was hilarious! I think my attempt at writing on “How to Brush your Teeth” was JUST a little bit better than that…….NOT! I’ve never laughed so hard in my life! I’m going to do that more now, after seeing that video. It seems fun!

That was so funny to watch Tim trying to follow Jacks instructions. Sometimes you have to think about what you’re writing and not doing because to think that someone is going to be following your instructions is sometimes too much to handle, when you already know what to do.
