As part of our Wellness Inquiry unit, we visited the VIS to investigate how elite athletes manage their lives. We wanted to know what motivated them, what their goals were, a little about their training schedule, their dietary needs, how they managed success and disappointment, illness and injuries, family and social life, their education, and how they prepared physically and mentally for competitions.
We were lucky to have Paralympian track and field athlete, Katy Parrish, talk to us about her preparation for the London Paralympic Games. As well, Stephanie Hickey, a highly motivated snowboarder and TV sports presenter, told us about her struggles and ambition to get to the top of her sport. We learned about the part the team of coaches, doctors, psychologists, dieticians and others at the VIS have in helping to maintain a balance in their lives in preparing their body, mind and spirit not only for competition but to manage their lives.
